Dr. Julian Heicklen has been arrested and the bail was set at $50,000.00. Please attend
the Arts Festival Political rallies today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday) to show
support.
An update:
On Thursday at 12:00, Julian gave a speech in front of about 75 people, including about
7 newspeople, on the corner of College and Allen. He then smoked a joint. The police were
there, but only moved close when the joint was nearly gone and claimed that they
couldnt smell anything.
A few minutes later, Julian was smoking the joint, and the cops moved in again and
decided that the joint was in fact marijuana. They then handcuffed
him and dragged him to the police car. He was eventually taken to District Magistrate
Prestia, who set bail at $50,000 straight bail, meaning that Julian has to pay the full
amount in order to be released. He will thus be in jail until his hearing on
Wednesday, July 15. Its clear those in charge dont want Julian to have a voice
during Arts Fest.
The rallies continue, but weve lost our hero. The police
are making this as difficult as possible: were not permitted to use any electronic
amplification, were not allowed to use tables, chairs, or even have boxes on the
ground. Were not permitted to sell buttons or books. We were told that any signs we
leave on the ground will be picked up as litter.
We will be at the corner of College and Allen from 12-8 today and 12-6 tomorrow. We
need people to hold signs, to pass out literature, get petitions signed, and just talk to
passersby. We appreciate your support!
