(Marijuananews note: Even for the Drug Czars so-called Office
of National Drug Control Policy this is a bit much. This site http://www.projectknow.com/A2_true_lies.html was brought to my attention a few weeks ago by a kind reader, but I was
reminded of it again by a full page ad in the January 11, 1999 issue of USNews.,
along with numerous pharmaceutical company ads and a story about Viagra related
fatalities.

To Get Share of $775 Million Ad CampaignThe
site purports to be a refutation of common lies about "drugs" --
although, as always eight out of ten are about marijuana, presumably spread by the evil
legalizers. Everything that they say about marijuana is pointlessly misleading or an
outright lie, sometimes contradicting the governments own data. In one case it
even contradicts data on the same site!

bottom of the page.
The "True Lies" and their "truth" are in Italics.

1. Marijuana isnt as strong as it used to be.
Truth: Since the marijuana available nowadays is over 500 percent more powerful than it
was ten years ago, the dangers of smoking marijuana are much more serious than they were
in the 1960s.
(Marijuananews note: Number one is a classic "straw
man." I dont know of anyone who claims that "marijuana isnt as
strong as it used to be." However, the opposite claim, which is the "True
Lies" answer, has become a staple of prohibitionist propaganda.
According to the US government sponsored Potency Monitoring Project, the only source of
data on the potency of marijuana in DEAland, the average potency in 1989 was 2.66%. The
National Institute On Drug Abuse says that average potency today is around 3%. According
to official tests in the Netherlands, the average potency of marijuana there is around 8%.

Moreover, there is no data on potency from the 1960s, and
there is no reason to believe that more potent marijuana is more dangerous.)

Analysis By Richard Cowan
2. Marijuana is better for you than smoking tobacco cigarettes.
Truth: Marijuana smoke causes cancer more than cigarette smoke. In fact, because marijuana
smokers try to hold the smoke in their lungs as long as possible, one marijuana cigarette
can be as damaging to the lungs as four tobacco cigarettes
(Marijuananews note: Of course, there is no data proving that
marijuana has caused cancer. Second, the risk in both tobacco and marijuana is dose
related and most tobacco users consume far more smoke than marijuana smokers. How long
marijuana smokers hold the smoke in their lungs is an artifact of marijuana prohibition,
not a characteristic of the plant.)
3. Since marijuana grows from the ground, it must be natural.
Truth: There are more than 400 chemicals in the average marijuana plant.
(Marijuananews note: This is not really an answer, but in any
case, coffee and orange juice, like most plants have hundreds of chemicals. A more
straightforward answer would be that there are many highly toxic plants, like tobacco, so
being natural doesnt prove anything about safety, but they seem incapable of being
straightforward.)
4. Marijuana stays in your body for less than 24 hours.
Truth: The active chemical in marijuana can stay in the body 14 days after smoking a
joint. Even after a person has stopped smoking, the marijuana stays in their body and can
still affect their ability to do things like drive, play sports, or do well on tests in
school.
(Marijuananews note: Completely wrong. It is the metabolites of
marijuana that stay in the body, not the "active chemical." Amazingly, elsewhere
on the same site one will find:
"THC in marijuana is strongly absorbed by fatty tissues in various organs. Generally,
traces (metabolites) of THC can be detected by standard urine testing methods several days
after a smoking session. However, in heavy chronic users, traces can sometimes be detected
for weeks after they have stopped using marijuana."
Of course, vitamin E also is stored in the body for a long time.)
5. Marijuana is harmless.
Truth:Marijuana is a drug that impairs. For example, it impairs attention and memory and
hinders the ability to learn or solve problems. It impairs decision-making which can lead
users to use bad judgment or get into dangerous situations.
(Marijuananews note: For years the prohibitionist have been
using the straw man argument that "marijuana isnt harmless" which
aside from being dishonest tends to give kids the idea that a lot of cool people
say that it is.
See
Is marijuana
really harmless, like everyone has been saying?
The acute effects of marijuana may impair judgement and attention, but it may also enhance
other senses, which is why people use it. Of course, nothing here will tell kids why
people use marijuana.)
6. Marijuana is not addictive.
Truth: Experts are not yet sure if marijuana is addictive, but they are sure that some
marijuana users develop something called "amotivation syndrome." People who
develop this disorder become extremely lazy, unmotivated, and they lose interest in things
they used to enjoy.
(Marijuananews note: It would have been so much better to tell
the truth. Marijuana is not physically addictive, but some people, especially young people
who use it inappropriately to cope with their problems, may become dependent on it. The
"amotivational syndrome" is a left-over from the 1960s version of reefer
madness. Kids can see that many of their peers use marijuana and are not
"amotivated.")
7. Almost all teenagers use marijuana.
Truth: Four out of five teens do not use the drug and most teens disapprove of using
drugs.
(Marijuananews note: True enough, but notice the switch from
marijuana to "drugs.")
8. If you only buy drugs from friends, you will get the pure stuff.
Truth: Illegal drugs are often messed with on the street. No one can know what is really
in them. For example, marijuana can be laced with PCP.
(Marijuananews note: True enough, but this is an argument
against marijuana prohibition. How often is beer adulterated? Marijuana is less likely to
be adulterated than any other illegal drug, but the only example of adulteration that they
give is for marijuana.)
9. You have to use drugs for a long time before they can really hurt you.
Truth: Drugs can cause the brain to send the wrong signals to the body. This can make a
person stop breathing, have a heart attack, or go into a coma. This can happen the first
time a drug is used.
(Marijuananews note: Again, true enough, but not about
marijuana. Marijuana is almost the only drug that cannot cause a fatal reaction. Eight of
the ten questions are about marijuana. None are about alcohol or prescription drugs.)
10. Inhalants are not risky to use.
Truth: Using inhalants even one time can put you at risk of sudden death or suffocation.
Prolonged use can lead to nose bleeds or liver, lung, or kidney disease. Inhalants can
also cause brain damage.
(Marijuananews note: Completely true, but after they have lied
to the kids on all the items about marijuana, is it surprising that they wont be
believed when they tell the truth about inhalants? The most recent survey of teen
"drug" use in California showed that more kids were using inhalants than
marijuana. Nonetheless, 80% of the space on this page is devoted to lying about marijuana.
This is truly "sending the wrong message.")
