It Is Now
Official Policy For Employees Of The Royal Ontario Museum To Lie To US Customs Officials.
The new U.S. practice of asking Canadians at customs if theyve ever smoked marijuana
is poorly thought out. For one thing, as John Stuart Mill pointed out over a century ago
about religious oaths, it only catches the honest pot smokers, current or former. For
another, if it were rigorously enforced, our consul in L.A., one Kim Campbell, would have
been unable to enter the U.S. because she admits she has smoked it, and inhaled (but
didnt like it). Speaking of inhale to the chief, President Bill Clinton, should he
go abroad, would also be refused reentry under this policy.
On second thought, maybe they have thought it through.
(Ed. note: The May 4 issue of Business Week has an article about
the harassment of Canadian business professionals at the border, but no mention of the
marijuana issue. It would seem that the Border Patrol let their new power corrupt them.
Funny how that happens. A group of US immigration attorneys has filed suit to try to stop
this abuse.)
