A Letter From
Oregon Shows What the Medical Marijuana Movement Is Really All AboutDecember
9, 1998
Richard-
Thanks again for your fine work. Oregon update:
My doctor is afraid.
The day after Oregons new medical use law took effect I counseled with my
doctor, as he had anticipated, being familiar with my history.

The OMA said not to expect any information [cooperation?] until May 1999 when the
questions and logistics of a registration system are worked out (something probably out of
their hands.) The medical professionals seem to need more direction with this primarily
due to their fear of Federal agencies lifting their licenses.
The new Oregon law makes a distinction between a prescription and a recommendation. The
doctor may not prescribe cannabis. However he may recommend its possible beneficial
effects for the patient in question [supposedly without fear of prosecution or
persecution, at least at the State level.]
So what has changed?
A registered user may grow up to three mature plants and have up to 1 oz at any time
without fear of prosecution.
Im afraid the Feds will steal my legitimately acquired
home.
Im afraid drug tests will continue to discriminate against my employment
qualifications.
Most of all, Im afraid of the kind of world I will have made if nothing is
done for fear.
A little direction would help at this time.
Thank you, M.
(Marijuananews note: In reality, there is very little
"direction" that I can give someone in Ms position. Except possibly to see
if the state Democratic Party will defend its own party platform.

Democrats Support Medical Marijuana; Called "Crazy Plank" By Party Chairman
Oregon has a well-established and effective marijuana reform
movement, as well as some of the most extreme prohibitionists in DEAland. As this letter
illustrates the battle has really just begun, because implementation is everything.
This is not a theoretical medical question for M and the many others like him. Will the
Oregon medical establishment continue to sacrifice the welfare of its patients?
Fear rules the day.)
