Hair Testing Has One Great
"Advantage": It Catches More Blacks Than Whites
New York,
March 12
The New York City police department plans to use hair analysis to determine if its
officers use drugs. According to the Daily News, the NYPD will implement the new program
over the next few months to learn which members of the force have
used cocaine or marijuana during the last six months. Urine tests only can detect coke use
within three days and pot within a month.
However, a group called 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care say the test is unfair
to women and minorities, because their hair retains more drug traces than mens.
Also, tests conducted on darker-skinned people can find more traces of drugs than people
with lighter skin and hair.
