New Hemp Seed Study And Other Things You Can Find
By Searching Medline For Free! By John Dvorak, Hempologist

June 15, 1998

From John Dvorak:

You can search the entire medline database for free by following this link http://www.nlm.nih.gov/databases/freemedl.html

This database has a tremendous amount of information. By using keywords such as cannabis, hemp, and marijuana, you’ll find the references to thousands of published articles. Many of the references include an abstract which gives additional info.

The first item below is a new study that I just heard about thanks to Rob Clarke of the International Hemp Association and Remy Chevalier. I think it could be important.

Happy searching and bast regards.

John Dvorak

Medline search for "cannabis" and "amino":

Isolation and primary structure of a methionine- and cystine-rich seed Protein of Cannabis sativa.

Odani S, Odani S
Department of Home Economics, Faculty of Education, Niigata University, Japan.

Abstract:

A 10-kDa protein was isolated from resting seeds of hemp (Cannabis sativa) by buffer extraction, gel filtration, ion-exchange chromatography, and reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. The protein did not inhibit bovine trypsin. It consisted of subunits composed of 27 and 61 residues and was held together by two disulfide bonds. The complete amino acid sequence was identified by protein analysis, and had 20 mole% of amino acids containing sulfur. The protein was most similar to a methionine-rich protein of Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) and to Mabinlin IV, a sweetness-inducing protein of Capparis masaikai. The high methionine content and the absence of trypsin inhibitory activity suggested that the seed protein can be used to improve the nutritional quality of plant food-stuffs.

We describe 4 patients who suffered gastrointestinal disorders and psychological effects after eating salad prepared with hemp seed oil. The concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in this oil far exceeded the recommended tolerance dose. Our observations prompted the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health to publish warnings in the press concerning consumption of this oil. We describe the symptoms of orally ingested THC and point out unresolved problems connected with food containing hemp.
