SPOKANE, February 28 - Marijuana has become more potent over the
years. In Spokane, police say its as popular as ever.
Last week, Sheriffs deputies raided a grass growing operation and arrested two
people, but say thats a drop in the bucket.
Lt. Chan Bailey says part of the problem - is the potency. "In
the 70s, the THC levels were normally around one or two percent, and now its common
to see them around 10 percent, and now an extremely well-taken-care-of plant may approach
20-percent THC." THC is the high-inducing chemical in marijuana, and it means
users tend to get a better high from fewer smokes. Bailey says thats one reason for
the increasing popularity.

Authorities are trying to control the growth in use, however, through education, drug
abuse programs and proper punishment.
"We can keep our fingers in the dyke and keep it from getting worse. I think
well have up and downs, and I think Spokane is in an upswing in drug abuse and drug
problems," he says.
(Marijuananews note: Notice that "marijuana" equals
"drug abuse." Of course, there are some marijuana stories that MSNBC
Spokane may not report.)
