(Ed. note: Not all "drug" tests
are marijuana tests. Notice that the stated objective in keeping out students who have
been drinking is to prevent violence at the dance, not some theoretical future risk. What
does this tell us about the comparative social consequences of alcohol and marijuana use?
What would happen if marijuana use increases? Violence would decrease. That may be
un-American, but it is not un-Canadian.Consider the
implications of reading this article on this site. That is how context gives meaning.)

MAGRATH TEENS MAY HAVE TO FACE BREATHALYZER
MAGRATH (CP)
If students want to go to a dance at Magrath High School, they
may need to pass a breathalyser test.
During the dances, the school in this southern Alberta town will randomly select
students to provide a breath sample before theyre allowed in, said principal Robert
Nelson.
Any student who refuses to blow will not be allowed into the
dance, Nelson said of the plan, which is aimed at cutting down on fights.
"If they dont want to blow, they dont come to the dance.
(Ed. note: "Blow" is the Dutch slang term for marijuana
smoking.)
Thats their right. They dont have to blow if they dont want to.
Were not going to force them," he said.
"Were responsible for those students while they are at our activities. We feel like we can be a little bit more responsible by making sure that
they havent been drinking."
The school will notify parents of students who flunk the breathalyser test, he said.
A nearby school also uses the device at dances and it has cut down the number
of fights, Nelson said.
