California Nurses Association -- Representing 30,000 Registered Nurses --
Urges Judge Breyer Not to Wait For Appeals Court Ruling;
Allow Oakland Club to Distribute Medical Marijuana Now!
Special to Marijuananews

October 28, 1999

(Marijuananews note: This extraordinary letter presents the reality of medical marijuana. It is an honor for me to post it.)

Full text of letter dated October 21, 1999:

Dear Judge Breyer:

We are writing to you as representatives of 30,000 registered nurses and members of the medical community in support of the Oakland Cannabis Buyer’s Cooperative’s efforts to alleviate the unnecessary suffering and needless pain of patients who meet the medical necessity standard to receive medical cannabis.

The recent decision to allow distribution of cannabis to patients who fit the medical necessity standard, as outlined by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, is appropriate. Many, many studies support the use of medical cannabis to control the side effects of chemotherapy as well as for specific illnesses such as glaucoma. To deny a patient’s use of any drug that allows them relief from the ravages of illness would be immoral.

A decision by your court to immediately modify your injunction – rather than wait for the conclusion of any reconsiderations or appeals – would be in the best interest of patients and help avert much needless death, suffering, and pain; promote delivery of effective health care by nurses, and help assure safety for both nurses and patients.

We are strongly in support of their efforts in this case, and trust that you will act in good faith, with humanity, and with the best interest of the medical community at heart in your decision.

Thank you for you attention. Please do not hesitate to contact my office should you need any further information on the medical cannabis issue or CNA’s position on this matter.

Sincerely,

Kay McVay, RN
CNA President
